GENERAL PHILIP EFFIONG: THE MAN WHO STRONGLY STOOD By Dr. Uchenna Dike (Kiev-Ukraine)
He served with passion He went into action He loved the vision And believed the reason Biafra for him was a worthy cause Negative enticements he did refuse He fought mainly for self-defence He knew there was a serious offence General Effiong fought with determination To avoid total but planned annihilation Of peoples marked for extermination Even when their army lacked ammunition He bore his armour strongly and hard He gave the peoples all that he had With hope and courage he went to the front With all gallantry he faced the known brunt When the going became tough And the tides tilted so rough He looked at the peoples’ fears And recognized the extent of their tears Being brave and shunning cowardice He called for an urgent armistice While the 3rd Marine Commando ravaged On a people slated to be solely starved He initiated the peaceful negotiations With vision he assembled the delegations To assist in finding the peaceful solutions Based on the known OAU-AU resolutions He called for a wise deliberation It was not in anyway capitulation He assembled his team to the table Because he knew they were able
With all the odds at the time Risking being fired on the line He got "No victor no vanquished" A feat none in history ever matched He said: Come let us be one once again When all on both sides had seen the pain The fighting morale were terribly low Results were severely very far below His speech on that day January 12 Was different from that of June 12 His was to salvage a bad situation The other was a big time tribulation Effiong had the chance to make gold But he chose the finest to be bold He served humanity with humility He did all he could to give vitality He moved to stop devastating starvation He succeeded in stopping retardation With men Effiong did set a real pace With the Almighty Effiong will have peace In life you were not honoured as was due Take solace for God surely heard your hue A warrior that lives beyond his own line Your deeds are marked on the sands of time
Obong Philip Effiong! Akangang Ibiono Ibom! General! Ochiagha! Ochiagha Biafra! Rest in perfect peace with your creator The living will do you a great honour.
