NATIONAL REBIRTH
By
Uwem Inyang
On 5 October 2002, a new group, the Association for Government Accountability in Nigeria (AGAIN) was born. It was proposed and
conceived by Nigerians at home and in Diaspora. Subscribers are spread across UK, Tanzania, Holland, USA, Canada and South Africa.
The birth of this group followed a series of heated debates on the moribund, ailing and failing standards in governance in Nigeria for the past 42 years. The debates
produced intense analysis and brainstorming that with the consequent idea for the formation of group that will essentially spread the essence of Good Governance and
Accountability in Nigeria.
It is imperative that the positive effects of good governance must be disseminated while the ugly and evil repercussions of lack of it must be highlighted to all and
sundry be they the citizens of our plural society or the individuals who currently hold the commanding heights of governance. The avowed objective is to ensure that
in the interest of a virile and upbeat future Nigeria, we set in train a process expected to ensure responsible and
answerable leadership in all the echelons of governance.
While doing this, we expect Nigerians to have a rethink about the calibre of people that they choose for elective positions. The group’s motto “Unity in Action,”
symbolises our unified intention devoid of any ethnic agenda whatsoever and abolishes any sentimental ulterior connotations of our intensity and integrity. AGAIN is a
committed assemblage of individuals of transparent integrity who aim at playing a foremost role in the redemption of the Nigerian polity and populace. Again reminds
Nigerians on the need for all hands to
be on deck for the restoration of our national pride and self-importance.
Three fundamental questions that emerged at the inception of this group are as
follows:
1. How long will Nigeria continue in the melancholy of retrogression?
2. What shall we tell our children over the continued wastage and criminally negligent poor husbanding and management of, and the obscene wastage of our endowed human
and natural resources?
3. If we do not embark on the journey of recovery and rebirth now, then when will hope arrive for our peoples?
After candid discourse and exchange of deep thoughts, it was decided that this is the time to make the move and sensitize all as well as create the requisite
awareness. We declare that the destiny of Nigeria lies in the hands of her citizens as the Almighty has given and endowed us all with the commonwealth that we need to
enjoy the necessities of life.
The resources of Nigeria are being squandered and abused by those who had and still possess the opportunity to rectify the deplorable situation but refuse or are
unable to do so. From the state of our Roads, Healthcare, Education, Industry, Security of lives and property, Water, Electricity, to all other basic amenities and
rights, Nigerians are yet to obtain talk less of maximise their prospects thus reducing their levels of livelihood to an aberration and an abnormality. They are
sentenced to a lifetime of penury in abject poverty while a few waste and squander the commonwealth in an obscene and insane reckless frenzy and an orgy of carefree
abandon like drunken sailors.
The situation must improve. Things must get better. That is why AGAIN is determined to contribute in anyway possible to the rebirth and dawn of a Nigeria that
progresses to attain its destiny as the most powerful and Black nation and the pride of the Black world. The people must be made aware of their role and power in a
democracy and what is expected from the elected.
The elected must realise that they, as servants should represent the masses honourably and consult with their wards on a regular basis to keep abreast with the issues
affecting them on ground. As 2003 approaches, there is a need for a very high mental awareness and a spirited national rebirth. The cankerworm of hopelessness in
governance that has eaten so deep over the years must be checked and never be allowed to return to devour the hopes and aspirations of the people. The voice of the
oppressed and depressed in the wilderness must be heard by our leaders and their desperation subsequently addressed.
AGAIN will highlight continuously issues that affect our fatherland, stress the importance of Good Governance at all levels of government, remind our fellow citizens
and women of their role in the evolution of a better Nigeria. Your patient understanding, moral and spiritual backing on this platform is solicited. Only Nigerians
can save Nigeria and a stitch in time will save more than 120 million Nigerian souls from perpetual distress and impending perdition.
With divine grace of the Almighty, we hope to use this medium to reach out to all and sundry about the need of a nation-wide reconciliation, regeneration, rearmament
and resuscitation from the lethargic stupor that our country has sunk. It is on the note that we seek your audience and support for this worthy cause.
