Lead Counsel seeking staff attorney with 1-5 years post NYSC experience.

Essential Job Functions:

Niger Delta Peoples Action seeks the services of a staff lawyer to assist in ongoing litigation. Right candidate must be conversant with Niger Delta, the oil industry, Niger Delta environmental issues and able to adjust quickly to changing work conditions. Accepted candidate must also be able to interface with other lawyers, work in a team setting and interact with lawyers from other parts of the world.

 

Handles cases of lesser complexity and/or exposure, or assists in cases of greater complexity and/or exposure, including preparation of pleadings, motions, discovery, and briefs, attendance at hearings, mediations, conferences, interviews and trials or arbitrations, and performance of any other tasks or duties necessary for the proper representation of clients.

 

Performs other tasks or duties as assigned by lead counsel and project coordinator.

Maintains and updates computerized litigation support systems for assigned projects.

Performs other functions as assigned.

 

Your responsibilities shall also include but will not be limited to:

1. Coordinating activities of the Nigerian legal experts and others involved in the political/organizational aspects of the NDPA resident in the Niger Delta.

2. Receiving instructions from the American legal team and working with Nigerian legal experts to execute them.

3. Notifying the American legal team of significant developments/news that may impact prosecution of the NDPA.

4. Bringing to the attention of the American legal team all written communications (concerning the NDPA) between staff counsel and any party in reference to the performance of his or her duties.

5. Identifying, screening and recommending experts/lawyers to the American legal team.

6. Working with the Nigerian legal experts and others to gather relevant evidence.

7. Regularly communicating (telephone, email, snail mail, etc.) with the American legal team

8. Performing all other duties assigned to you by the American Legal team

9. Guaranteeing complete confidentiality during and after period of employment.

 

Education Requirements:

Law degree from an accredited Nigerian University, law school

and called to the bar, member in good standing with the Nigerian Bar

Association. Completed mandatory National Youth Service Corp.

 

Experience & Special Skill Requirements:

At least one year post NYSC law experience. Be willing to take instruction from senior lawyers in the project. Must be capable of handling cases of lesser exposure and/or complexity with minimum supervision. Must be able to secure affidavits from prospective witnesses, and interview prospective witnesses. Computer literate and ability to use productivity software like Microsoft office will be an added advantage.
